Presentations by Dr. Geoff Howes and Education Coordinator Michael McMaster about the German-American experience during World War I in Northwest Ohio.
Many German Americans supported Germany's war aims at first, but fully backed the USA once it entered the World War. Dr. Geoff Howes, retired BGSU professor from the Department of German, Russian and East Asian Languages, will talk about how this transformation played out in the local German-American press.
Wood County Historical Museum Education Coordinator, Michael McMaster, will discuss selections from his book, Henry County in the Great War: German-Americans, Patriots, and Loyalty 1914-1918. Learn how, in 1918, the League of American Patriots of Henry County conducted loyalty trials and perpetrated a campaign of persecution against Henry County’s German-Lutheran Churches.
Enjoy German food and fellowship. $5 suggested donation, WCHS Members FREE.
