FOODWAYS: In 1936 Cain’s Marcelled Potato Chips was founded in the garage of Emerson and Irma Cain on Lehman Avenue in Bowling Green, Ohio. Cain came up with a thicker, wavier chip that was different from the popular flat, thin chip. Inspired by the appearance of their chip, the Cains named their company after the popular women’s wavy hairstyle in the 1930’s called the Marcelle. In later years the Cains decided to drop Marcelled from their company name. The original factory was in the Cain family garage with one delivery truck and six employees. In 1953, due to the growth of their business, they built a new building on Napoleon Road. The Cains had seven warehouses with the largest one in Toledo, Ohio. Additional warehouses were located in Sandusky, Defiance, Bucyrus, and Wapakoneta, Ohio and Adrian and Monroe, Michigan. The Cain’s Potato Chip Company had a very down-home feel. For instance, the Cain’s plant was always open for tours, even those that were unexpected and last minute. The Cain’s Potato Chip Company also prided themselves on having a very state of the art machine. Emerson Cain had developed and patented a machine which salted both sides of the chips. This technology gave his chips a more unique taste. During the 1960’s, the Cain family decided to move to Phoenix Arizona and sold their stock shares to Cain’s brother-in-law, Walter T. Hadley, and Hadley’s son, Carter Hadley. In 1977, the Cain’s Potato Chip company finished its existence in Bowing Green when it was sold to the Clubrow Company. |
