THE GROUNDS
The 50-acre grounds include a variety of areas for reunions, ceremonies, picnics, and special events. This lush and unique backdrop is often used by photographers for senior photos, family gatherings, or artistic projects. The site includes:
• Herb garden
• Two walking trails
• Lyle Fletcher Arboretum
• Boomtown District: Blacksmith Shop, Oil Derrick, Log Cabin
• Pauper’s Cemetery
Many original outbuildings still adorn the property including the Lunatic Asylum , Pole Barn, Hog Barn, and Ice House. These buildings can be open for viewing during business hours.
There is no charge to reserve the Historical Center Grounds, but advanced reservations are required. Availability subject to the Wood County Park District and the Wood County Historical Society.
While on our grounds, please respect the following rules:
• The grounds are maintained by the Wood County Park District and are open to the public free of charge from dawn (about 8:00 AM) to dusk (about 6:00 PM in winter, 9:00 PM in summer).
• Reservations are necessary to avoid conflicts with Museum and Park events.
• Picnic tables and benches are available.
• (1) Handicap-accessible portable restroom is located in Visitor Parking Lot.
• Alcohol is not permitted on grounds.
• Please do not stand on the Brandeberry stone wall surrounding the property. This wall is an original structure built in the early 1900s and can crumble easily.
• Please do not pick any flowers, plants, or herbs from the grounds. Leaf collection, however, is permitted.
• Please dispose of any trash in one of the many trash cans throughout the site.

THE HERB GARDEN
Our lovely herb garden, maintained by the Black Swamp Herb Society, is the perfect location for any special event. Gardens overlook two ice ponds, which house a water fountain during summer months. Wildlife includes birds, ducks, geese, squirrels, and rabbits. Deer may roam in the wooded areas, but are not often seen during day-time events.
There is no charge to reserve the Herb Garden, but advanced reservations are required. Availability subject to the Black Swamp Herb Society and the Wood County Historical Society.
• Same rules apply as “THE GROUNDS”
• Picking or handling of any flowers, plants, or herbs inside the garden is prohibited.
