SUMMARY:Tea & Talk Series: Wings of Change - The Women Airforce Service Pilots
DESCRIPTION:***THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT – CALL 419-352-0967 TO BE PUT ON THE WAIT LIST*** \n  \n“Wings of Change: The Women Airforce Service Pilots” \nWhen the U.S. Air Force announced in the 1970s that it would accept women for pilot training for the “first time\,” history enthusiasts and advocates quickly rallied to recognize the pioneering Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II. These courageous women were the first to ferry military aircraft\, flying everything from trainers to bombers\, all while proving that women could master “the Army way” of flying just as skillfully as their male counterparts. \nThis presentation takes you on an inspiring journey through the history of the WASPs—their rigorous training\, vital contributions to the war effort\, and the obstacles they faced in a military system that wasn’t ready to accept them. You’ll hear stories of their resilience\, determination\, and the lasting impact they had on future generations of female aviators. Complete with historical photos\, compelling firsthand accounts\, and a rare look at the flight gear they wore—including an authentic WWII flight mechanic’s “zoot suit”—this presentation brings to life the extraordinary women who insisted that a woman’s place is in the cockpit! \nAbout the Speaker: \nWendy Zielen grew up in upstate New York but became a lifelong Michigander when she met her husband at the University of Michigan. Currently\, she is the Executive and Development Director for Bendix Academy\, a small nonprofit organization in Brighton Michigan that teaches toolmanship through mentorship. Wendy enjoys utilizing her industry expertise to promote worthy youth advocacy\, underserved communities\, environmental sustainability\, and historical preservation causes. She especially enjoys sharing the inspiration for the Willow Run story and Rosie the Riveter’s Can-Do spirit! \nEach monthly tea & talk starts with a catered luncheon\, warm tea\, and a unique presentation over a topic of interest. Reservations are required and are due the Friday before each tea. All Ticket Sales are Final. Tickets are final sale & non-refundable. Handicap accessible facilities. Groups Welcome. \nPrice: $30/Museum Members\, $35/Non-Members\, $35/Gluten Free/Vegan Meal \n  \n

SUMMARY:America250 Lecture Series – When Oil Was King of The Black Swamp
DESCRIPTION:The talk will focus on the great oil and gas boom that began in 1880’s in Northwest Ohio and became the driving economic force for much of the region and its future. Thousands of wells were drilled and many of them were in Wood County and Hancock Counties which was the center of it all\, as rural farm fields were studded by a forest of oil and gas derricks amid a harvest of black gold. With the gushers of success came a score of new towns and new people eager to claim a piece of the dream or maybe just a good job. Sometimes they did\, sometimes not. We’ll cover many of the facets of this most pivotal area in the story of the Black Swamp. \n  \nWhen: March 17\, 2026 at 6:00PM \nCost: FREE for members; $7 for non-members (tickets include a self-guided tour of the museum in addition to the program) \n***Each person attending must be a member to get the member rate. Members may not make reservations for non-members on their behalf*** \n  \nAbout the Speaker: Lou Hebert \nLou Hebert is a Toledo-area native who spent over 50 years working in broadcast newsrooms in this city( WCWA\, WTOL\, WDHO WSPD) and others around the nation including Detroit\, Denver\, Phoenix\, and Chicago. He has reported and produced both radio and television news and is an award documentary and feature reporter\, earning the coveted Peabody Award and numerous Emmy’s for TV production. In recent years\, Lou has become a self-professed history nerd\, writing and publishing several books on Toledo area history\, including Day by Day in Toledo and Toledo’s Hidden History.

SUMMARY:The Great Depression Lecture Series - "A New Deal: FDR\, Bureaucracy\, and Economic Recovery"
DESCRIPTION:The Great Depression Lecture Series – “A New Deal: FDR\, Bureaucracy\, and Economic Recovery”\nApril 1 | 6:00PM\nWood County Museum Meeting Room\nFREE \nThe election of Franklin D. Roosevelt\, in 1932\, was seen as a turning point in the fight against the Great Depression. His campaign\, which promised a “New Deal” for the American people\, stood in stark contrast to the failures of the previous administration. But how successful FDR’s visions for the future of economic recovery were yet to be seen. In this lecture\, we will explore the earliest days of the New Deal\, focusing specifically on the creation of new federal agencies and relief programs initiated by FDR’s administration. In doing so\, we will discuss the national and local implications of such measures and how they were received by the American people. \nThis is the fourth installment in the Great Depression Lecture Series\, an America 250 program. This is a Wood County Park District lead event\, in partnership with the Wood County Museum.

SUMMARY:The Great Depression Lecture Series - "Strike! Workers\, Unions\, and the Labor Movement in Town and Country"
DESCRIPTION:The Great Depression Lecture Series – “Strike! Workers\, Unions\, and the Labor Movement in Town and Country”\nMay 6 | 6:00PM\nWood County Museum Meeting Room\nFREE \nDuring the Great Depression\, American workers\, saddled with increasingly depressed wages and harsh working conditions\, demanded adequate pay and safe workplaces. To bring companies and government agencies to the bargaining table\, workers leaned on collective action as a means to secure victories. In both town and country\, they formed unions and initiated strikes to gain concessions. These actions\, however\, were often met with contention and\, in some cases\, led to violence. In this lecture\, we will examine the union campaigns that swept the nation during the Great Depression and how New Deal administrators responded. More specifically\, we will highlight how Northwest Ohio came to embody the united dismay felt by both urban and rural workers in their fight for unionization. \nThis is the fifth installment in the Great Depression Lecture Series\, an America 250 program. This is a Wood County Park District lead event\, in partnership with the Wood County Museum.

SUMMARY:America250 Lecture Series – Lost Eateries of Toledo
DESCRIPTION:🍽️ Table for None: Lost Toledo Eateries \nJoin Toledo author and storyteller Tedd Long for a journey back to the restaurants that once defined the city’s neighborhoods\, celebrations\, and everyday life—but have now vanished. \nTable for None: Lost Toledo Eateries brings to life the stories behind beloved diners\, elegant supper clubs\, corner taverns\, and family-run establishments that shaped Toledo’s food culture. Through historic photos\, menus\, advertisements\, and colorful anecdotes\, this presentation explores how these eateries reflected changing tastes\, immigration\, industry\, and social life in Toledo. \nThis isn’t just a talk about food—it’s about memory\, community\, and the places where Toledoans gathered to celebrate milestones\, conduct business\, and feel at home. Audience members are encouraged to reminisce\, laugh\, and share their own memories of restaurants that live on only in conversation. \n  \nWhen: May 19\, 2026 at 6:00PM \nCost: FREE for members; $7 for non-members (tickets include a self-guided tour of the museum in addition to the program) \n***Each person attending must be a member to get the member rate. Members may not make reservations for non-members on their behalf*** \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nTedd Long is an author\, blogger\, photographer\, lecturer\, and curator known for his work on holytoledohistory.com. SUMMARY:Meet & Greet with author Robert Kroeger
DESCRIPTION:Meet & Greet with Stone Barns of America\, Round Barns of America & Historic Barns of Ohio author Robert Kroeger \nMay 26\, 2026 • 6PM \nFree for Members/$7 Non-Member (tickets include a self-guided tour of the museum in addition to the program) \nJoin author\, Dr. Robert Kroeger\, as he shares stories about historic barns\, from three of his books “Stone Barns of America” “Historic Barns of Ohio” & “Round Barns of America”. Kroeger will tell his story of traveling throughout the county to preserve historic barn history via original paintings. Between the three books\, over 200 barns in 32 states\, are featured. \nDr. Kroeger will also be doing a book signing while at the Wood County Museum. \n  \n  \n \nAbout the Author: Dr. Robert Kroeger \n“Barns represent the heart of America\, and the old ones are bleeding. So many barns\, so little time.” – RF Kroeger\, artist and writer \n\nRobert Kroeger is a second generation artist\, though\, unlike his father Francis\, his professional art career blossomed later in life. A hint of what was to come began at the age of four when young Robert\, fascinated by his dad’s oils\, mischievously opened the tubes one day and started painting on his palette while dad was away at work. After finishing the masterpiece\, Robert neatly placed the tubes\, still opened\, and the beautiful sable-haired brushes wet with oil paint\, together with the palette\, back into his father’s treasured wooden art box\, shut tight. A few days later\, Francis\, who earned his BFA from the University of Notre Dame in 1938\, discovered his son’s “work.” \nThough he did not immediately follow in his father’s footsteps\, Robert’s career as a dentist allowed him to study color values and facial esthetic principles in smile design. Then\, in the early 2000s while staying in a rural bed and breakfast in Licking County\, Ohio\, a lonely deteriorating barn\, “Granville Gray\,” called out to him.  With roof sagging\, boards missing\, corners slightly tilted\, and in obvious disrepair it captivated his eye. Suddenly a voice whispered\, “Paint it and write about it.” The message was like a lightning bolt that hit him between the eyes. Almost immediately\, it ignited his Ohio Barn Project\, which has taken Robert to about two dozen Ohio counties – from north to south and east to west – where he’s painted barns\, talked with owners\, and written stories about each structure. The stories can be found at www.barnart.weebly.com.  Hundreds of his paintings have raised funds for the local 4-H\, historical societies\, or other non-profits in the county where he works.

SUMMARY:The Great Depression Lecture Series - "Land of Our Own? Sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers in the Great Depression"
DESCRIPTION:The Great Depression Lecture Series – “Land of Our Own? Sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers in the Great Depression”\nAugust 5 | 6:00PM\nWood County Museum Meeting Room\nFREE \nA core tenet of the New Deal was to improve the economic standing of the nation’s farmers who had suffered from depressed commodity prices since the 1920s. Yet\, the implementation of these programs was often skewed solely toward landowners. For the millions of non-landowning farmers—sharecroppers\, tenant farmers\, and farmworkers—there existed little to no avenues for assistance. Consequently\, a debilitating cycle of debt\, evictions\, and displacements continued to plague this foundational section of American society. In the eighth installment of the Great Depression Lecture Series\, we will examine the conditions afflicting these non-landowning farmers and how the New Deal failed to mitigate their suffering. \nThis is the eighth installment in the Great Depression Lecture Series\, an America 250 program. This is a Wood County Park District lead event\, in partnership with the Wood County Museum.

SUMMARY:America250 Lecture Series – Sports in the Shadow of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Fields of Conflict: Sports in the Shadow of World War II \nTogether we will examine how World War II fundamentally reshaped athletics\, as major sporting events were suspended\, athletes were drafted into military service\, and leagues were forced to adapt for survival.
