This week’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a watercolor pai This week’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a watercolor painting of The Grand Kerr House in Grand Rapids, painted by Rebecca Wooster.

The Grand Kerr House is located on Beaver Street in Grand Rapids, Ohio. It was built in 1880 by Benjamin and Ann Kerr who worked with E.O Fallis as the architect/builder for the home. It took three years to complete the house with exterior walls that are four bricks thick, interior walls that are three bricks thick, and trim that was hand-carved from white oak, red oak, cherry, butternut, hard rock maple, and ash. The house contains two hand-crafted staircases, 34 carved doors, four ceramic tiled fireplaces, marble sinks, a copper bathtub, and stained glass windows.

Benjamin Franklin Kerr and wife, Ann Pratt Kerr, had seven children and their descendants occupied the home for nearly 100 years. In 1977, Laurie Hostetler purchased The Kerr House and spent two years restoring the Victorian mansion to its original grandeur where she offered a health and wellness spa for 35 years.

Today, The Grand Kerr House is a private residence.
Join us next week (5/6/26) for “Strike! Workers, U Join us next week (5/6/26) for “Strike! Workers, Unions, and the Labor Movement in Town and Country”:

During the Great Depression, American workers, saddled with increasingly depressed wages and harsh working conditions, demanded adequate pay and safe workplaces. To bring companies and government agencies to the bargaining table, workers leaned on collective action as a means to secure victories. In both town and country, they formed unions and initiated strikes to gain concessions. These actions, however, were often met with contention and, in some cases, led to violence. In this lecture, we will examine the union campaigns that swept the nation during the Great Depression and how New Deal administrators responded. More specifically, we will highlight how Northwest Ohio came to embody the united dismay felt by both urban and rural workers in their fight for unionization.

This is the fifth installment in the Great Depression Lecture Series, an America 250 program. This is a Wood County Park District lead event, in partnership with the Wood County Museum.
