This week’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a collapsible si This week’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a collapsible silk top hat from the turn of the 19th century.

Top hats were all of the rage but it left the wearer with one problem…storage! The collapsible top hat, or “opera hat” as it was nicknamed, allowed the style of the top with the convenience of being able to flatten it to store in a box, a brief case, or underneath a chair while in public. This convenience is what attracted performers, making it a very popular hat among magicians and vaudeville actors.
See history come alive May 1-3, 2026 at Early Ohio See history come alive May 1-3, 2026 at Early Ohio on the Portage, a Living History Reenactment event that features costumed interpreters portraying life during the exploration of the Northwest Territory and the Ohio Country, especially along and near the Portage River in Wood County. Experience early European settlers, military and political growth, and home life activities through period reenactors from 1700s to 1865.

This is the first mural at the Wood County Museum, located on the Gas Plant building. It was painted by Chilly Rodriguez, a local native Northwest Ohio artist. The mural depicts nature elements that are found in Northwest, Ohio, such as a cardinal, a tiger swallowtail butterfly, a mantis, and several flowers & plants.
