“Hayes Family Holiday Traditions”
19th president of the United States Rutherford Hayes loved celebrating the holidays with his family. As he recorded in his diary, “I do not think I ever enjoyed a Christmas so much when I was a little fellow, as I do now in seeing the happiness of my children.” Come hear about all the little things Rutherford and his wife Lucy did to make the holidays special for family, guests, and staff, both at home in Spiegel Grove and at the White House.
About the Speaker: Christie M. Weininger is the executive director of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio. Christie holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Otterbein University and a master’s degree in history from the University of Toledo. While at Otterbein, Christie spent a semester abroad at Roehampton Institute in Wimbledon, England, where studying “local history” meant working with documents that were 600 years old. Christie was the director of the Wood County Historical Center, Bowling Green, for nine years and spent seven years as director/curator of the Wyandot County Museum, Upper Sandusky. She is a former adjunct instructor of Public History and Ohio History at Heidelberg University in Tiffin.
