#museum30 - Day 12: Learning

When we re-opened a year ago, we unveiled our new interactive children’s exhibit. Since then, we have received so much wonderful feedback! The purpose of this room is to be a place where children can learn through play, with toys and activities tied into our current exhibits. In 2025, we will be adding some new activities to this room that will help educate children about World War II.

Another big project for 2025 will be creating a story book walk titled “A Day in the Life of Bert” that will teach children about people with disabilities. Children will follow Daniel the Squirrel as he meets a fictional version of former County Home resident, Bert Gifford. As they get to know each other, they find that they are not so different. We hope that, through this story, children will learn about empathy and kindness and apply these lessons as they encounter people with differences in their day to day life.

Given the history of this site, we are in a unique position to not only teach people about history, but also about people. At the end of the day, this was a home for many and a thriving community just like any other.

Mike McMaster, Education Coordinator, here again with “Did You Know?” This time with a story in honor of Veterans Day about Frances Hazel Peabody a WWI Nurse.

Frances Hazel Peabody was the only child born to Doctor and Mrs. Guy Francis Peabody on 29 Oct 1892. Dr. Peabody was a doctor, surgeon, and licensed pharmacist in Luckey, Ohio. Frances Hazel was a 1913 graduate of Pemberville High School and a 1918 graduate of Flower Hospital’s nursing school. The Pemberville Leader newspaper on 6 June 1918 announced her graduation and stated that she “volunteered for Red Cross service overseas.” Instead of an overseas assignment, Frances Hazel served with the Red Cross Public Health Service and a red star, for servicemen serving in the United States, was added to the Methodist Church’s service flag. Her name was continuously listed with the Pemberville and Luckey area soldiers serving for the remainder of the war. Sadly, on 1 Nov 1918, the newspaper listed that Frances Hazel Peabody’s red star was changed to gold as she had succumbed to influenza while treating victims of the Spanish Flu Pandemic at Flower Hospital. She was buried in her nursing uniform.

Today, her name is listed as one of the area casualties of WWI at the granite Veterans Memorial in Pemberville. Did you know that there is an older WWI memorial plaque at Pemberville High School? This small brass plaque was erected by the class of 1919 “In Memory of These Heroes of P.H.S. Who Gave Their Lives in the Great World Conflict.” Her name is spelled Francis on this, but Frances on her Troy Township Cemetery stone.
