Today’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a promotional Lake

Today’s #WhatIsItWednesday is a promotional Lake High School pencil that includes lyrics to the school’s fight song.

Lake Township School District was formed in 1908, combining 10 smaller school districts in the township. For the first six years of its existence, Lake High School was recognized by the State Department of Education as a high school of the second grade because there were only three grades. By 1915 a fourth year was added, making them a first class high school. Because of this, there was no graduating class in 1916

By the 1920s, as enrollment increased, a new school was built on a ten acre plot off of Moline-Millbury Road (now SR 795). By the 1950s, enrollment had increased again. To accommodate this, the old building was turned into an elementary school and a new high school was built next door.

Of all the updates and rebuilds, the most well known was in 2010 after an EF-4 tornado destroyed the school just hours before commencement. Lake students were educated at Owens Community College while the new building was constructed, finally returning for the 2012 school year.

Mike McMaster, Education Coordinator here to tell you about Royalton: The Lost town of Montgomery Township

The town of Royalton was surveyed in July 1836 by pioneer surveyor Hiram Davis, (who we have already learned about), for Doctor Jacob Kinnaman. This survey was done at the intersection of what we know as Bays Road and Portage View Road and where sections 29, 30, 31, and 32 all meet together in Montgomery Township. The first 18 lots were located on the northwest corner at Bays and Portage View Roads in section 30. The remaining lots, as best as can be determined, were located on the southwest and southeast corners of that intersection in sections 31 and 32.

Doctor Jacob Kinnaman’s son, Doctor John Kinnaman, was apparently, Royalton’s most principal resident. Doctor John Kinnaman was a graduate of Philadelphia College and his coming to Montgomery Township was, “hailed with delight by the settlers.” His location of medical practice was described as, “one-half mile west and two miles north of Millgrove;” which puts it in the rough vicinity of Royalton. Doctor John Kinnaman’s operating table was a very large walnut stump that also served as both laboratory and drug dispensary. When on house calls, he would tether his horse to a large branch and let it wander and graze there until John’s patient was out of danger; for up to 10 hours.

The young Doctor John Kinnaman died on September 4, 1838, at about the age of 25 years. His death was attributed to his, “excessive attention to medical study and overwork,” however he might have succumbed to diseases such as malaria or cholera, of which his patients also suffered. Doctor John Kinnaman is buried in section 1 old, row 15 of Riverview Cemetery in West Millgrove.
