Mike McMaster, Education Coordinator, here again with “Why We’re Here.” This time with a story about Cygnet/Siberts Baseball.

The photograph below shows a Cygnet baseball team from the early 1900s. If you look closer, however, a few of the players also have “Siberts” on their jerseys. “Siberts” was one of two general stores in Cygnet listed on a 1911 trade magazine (the other being Miller Department Store). The store was owned by Francis Sibert, who normally went by F.M.G. Sibert, and he most likely sponsored this team. F.M.G. Sibert was the son of John Sibert, an early pioneer of Wood County and Civil War Veteran. The 1910 Census lists F.M.G as married, living on Taylor Street in Weston, and as employed in insurance and real estate. However, F.M.G. was also a frequent subject of local newspaper articles not because of the success of his Cygnet baseball team, but of questionable business dealings. In June of 1904, charges that Sibert had unlawfully taken possession of Weston property and collected rents made the Wood County headlines. In December 1914, F.M.G Sibert was brought to U.S. District Court in Toledo for falsely claiming bankruptcy in 1912 and concealing assets worth $200,000 to his creditors. A Federal Grand Jury indicted Sibert who was arrested in May 1915 by Deputy U.S. Marshall Hugh Bartley on the streets of Bowling Green. In August 1915, Sibert was sentenced to Leavenworth Federal Prison. He arrived at prison on March 1, 1916 and discharged on December 18, 1916. Frances M.G. Sibert appears back on Taylor Street, Weston on the 1920 Census, but does not remain there long. The 1930 Census lists him as a 65 year old, divorced resident of Bay City, Michigan still pursing real estate. Francis Sibert died on February 14, 1942 in Bay City, Michigan. Although both his death record and 1940 Census lists him as a widower, his wife, Jennie (Dubbs) Sibert lived until 1953 and is buried with her parents in New Weston Cemetery, Wood County.
