We have a lot of original buildings to the site still standing. Here is a brief history of the Powerhouse/Boiler House, 1898: The Ohio State Board of Charities educated infirmary superintendents on the dangers of fire and strongly suggested the installation of steam heat instead of using stoves or wood burning fireplaces for heat. Initially the Wood County Infirmary benefitted from the discovery of natural gas for heat, but when the supply diminished around 1898, county commissioners made the decision to hire J.R. & J.H. Jones to build a boiler house and stack at a rate of $10.00 per 1000 bricks assembled. A coal-burning boiler was purchased for $240.00 and placed inside the brick structure. Heat was changed from coal to oil in 1955 and from oil to gas in 1958.

*Fun Fact – When a storm system caused heavy rains in 13 states, rivers overflowed and the event became known as the Great Flood of 1913 (March 23-26). 31 inches of water invaded the boiler house causing a loss of heat and light. Residents had to stay in bed for warmth.

Mike McMaster, Education Coordinator, here again with “Why We’re Here.” This time with a story about WWII & Chestnut Ridge Cemetery.

When I first was hired at the Wood County Museum 21 years ago, I immediately hit the road and began traveling to give programs all across the county and beyond. While on these road trips, I would often stop at cemeteries along the way; there is much good history to be learned in cemeteries.

In 2003, I stopped at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery on State Route 23 south of Route 6. Part of this cemetery is in Wood County, on the Bradner side, and the other side sits in Sandusky County. While in this cemetery, I came across the stone of Robert Allan Carter, Torpedoman 3rd Class, USS Herring, Lost, North Kurile Islands, June 1, 1944; instantly I recognized the US Navy Submarine badge that was carved in the granite above the name of Robert. This stone is Robert’s memorial, which is on the reverse side of his parent’s stone; they are buried there.

Robert was sadly lost at sea during WWII and his body never recovered. On May 21, 1944, the USS Herring left Midway Island in the Pacific for its 8th patrol. North Kurile Island is an uninhabited volcanic island north of Japan. During the war, the Japanese built an airfield there. The USS Herring attacked transport ships at the island and was lost, presumably, during this action.

14 years after wandering Chestnut Ridge, in 2017, the radio announced that the location of the USS Herring had been found. I recalled this as Robert Allan Carter’s submarine from that day in 2003 when I first had seen it. 73 years after the USS Herring had been lost, and about as many years since the end of WWII, the war was again very much real to many people; things in the past have a way of resurfacing in the present if we are careful observers and listeners.

Join the Wood County Museum and Safe Communities of Wood County for the 2nd Annual Safety Fair & Cruise-In Presented by USA Insulation of Toledo event, THIS SATURDAY, on May 18, 2024 from 11am-4pm! Rain or shine!

This is a FREE community event that the public will be able to get an up close look at/in: service vehicles, fire trucks, police cruisers, 1st responder vehicles, tractors, and construction equipment. There will also be a safety fair vendor tent, activities and bounce houses for kids, a car cruise-in (all cars welcome), plus so much more!

We will also have a quiet room located inside the museum.
