#exploreyourarchives - The Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky opened in 1888. Originally known as the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home, this facility was managed by the Ohio State Board of Charities for veterans of the Civil War. The original building is now functions as a museum dedicated to military history, while a new facility provides a 206-bed domiciliary and a 427-bed nursing home.

This postcard is part of our archival collection. It is addressed to: Mr. W. A. Waters, Toledo, Ohio, circa July 17, 1915. From: Mr. and Mrs. Walter.

#poorfarmfriday - The original Logan County Infirm

#poorfarmfriday - The original Logan County Infirmary was a 180-acre farm with a two-story brick main building containing 20 rooms and 44 beds for inmates. Rebuilding in 1910, the home had a capacity of 100 inmates. The 1912 Ohio State Board of Charities annual report "considered the Logan County Infirmary modern and a model of its kind and the unfortunates living there are enjoying the comforts and luxuries unknown to them in their own homes." Operating until 1978, the infirmary closed and was ultimately demolished. Today, Logan Acres Senior Community occupies the former infirmary site.

On the property of the Wood County Museum sits a Lunatic Asylum, built in 1885: The language used to describe those considered mentally ill in the 1800s included words like lunatic, idiotic, insane, or epileptic. Modern interpretation of mental illness requires placing events in historical context or understanding the situation that influenced the trends of the past. The words “lunatic asylum” were common for the late 1800s and use in modern context is not meant to imply negativity.

Prior to the construction of a new lunatic asylum, people considered insane lived in a dilapidated structure overlooking the hog pen. Starting in 1883 the Wood County Commissioners began the process of accepting bids from local contractors to construct a separate building for the insane; however, decisions were hindered by cost and the project was put on hold for nearly two years. In the end, Edwin Farmer was made manager of the construction and the lunatic asylum opened to inmates in late 1885.

The Ohio State Board of Charities worked with local county officials to perfect the process of managing those considered insane. A Warrant to Convey was issued if a person was deemed mentally ill and a judge determined if a person needed specific treatment. If the insanity exceeded the capabilities of the infirmary staff, the person would be sent to a state run mental hospital.
