Happy #PresidentsDay! Commemorative dishes have Happy #PresidentsDay!

Commemorative dishes have been around for centuries. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, they were ways to show your beliefs/political leanings to guests as you served them. By the 20th century, these types of plates became more popular as decorative pieces commemorating events, cities, anniversaries, and political leaders. Here are just a few Presidential themed plates and trays from our collections.

Don't miss the start of our 2026 Tea & Talk Series Don't miss the start of our 2026 Tea & Talk Series! The Series will kick off on March 12th at 2pm with a wonderful talk over the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP's) of World War II.

When the U.S. Air Force announced in the 1970s that it would accept women for pilot training for the “first time,” history enthusiasts and advocates quickly rallied to recognize the pioneering Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II. These courageous women were the first to ferry military aircraft, flying everything from trainers to bombers, all while proving that women could master “the Army way” of flying just as skillfully as their male counterparts.

This presentation takes you on an inspiring journey through the history of the WASPs—their rigorous training, vital contributions to the war effort, and the obstacles they faced in a military system that wasn’t ready to accept them. You’ll hear stories of their resilience, determination, and the lasting impact they had on future generations of female aviators. Complete with historical photos, compelling firsthand accounts, and a rare look at the flight gear they wore—including an authentic WWII flight mechanic’s “zoot suit”—this presentation brings to life the extraordinary women who insisted that a woman’s place is in the cockpit!

Get your tea tickets today, as this program is sure to sell out!

The Winter Olympics are upon us and we would be re The Winter Olympics are upon us and we would be remiss to not mention our most famous Olympian, Scott Hamiton!

Scott, who was born in Toledo in 1958, was adopted by Earnest and Dorothy Hamiton; both professors at BGSU. From a very young age, Scott was plagued with health problems that stunted his growth. His mother estimated that he had spent three of his first 10 years in the hospital. At one point, during one of his more serious health turns, he was given just months to live. He, miraculously, recovered thanks, in part, to increasing his physical activity through skating. Scott went from needing a feeding tube to being able to enjoy childhood treats, such as ice cream and chocolate, and attend school full time at Kenwood Elementary.

Skating was initially just a passion for Scott and not something he intended to take pro. However, due to the rigorous training it required, it sent him on that path. He eventually moved to Colorado to pursue the sport further. His parents continued to support him even as his mother was being treated for breast cancer. Sadly, Dorothy Hamilton passed away in 1977. Scott used this to further motivate himself, working to secure a spot in the U.S. Olympic Skating team. From October 1980 through March of 1984, Scott won 4 U.S. Championships, 4 World Championships, and Olympic Gold in the 1984 Sarajevo games; a feat that hasn't been repeated since. “...the greatest form of recognition…[is] knowing that the city of Bowling Green is behind me”, said Scott during his homecoming.

Today, Scott Hamliltion is champion for cancer research and fundraising. Surviving cancer himself, he raises money through his CARES foundation. He is an author, sports commentator, and motivational speaker. He and his wife, Tracie, live in Tennessee and have four children together.
